Child Psychologist’s Guide: 3 Phrases for Angry Kids

Getting through a child’s anger can be a real challenge. Working with kids as a child psychologist, I’ve come to understand that anger isn’t just bad.

It’s actually a type of message, telling us something like feeling hurt or treated wrongly.

Try to recall when you last got angry. It probably felt reasonable at that moment.

But, it’s important for everyone to learn how to handle anger in a positive way. Here are three sentences I think parents should say more to their kids when they’re feeling angry or upset:

  1. “I can see why you’re upset about this, and I understand.”

For us grown-ups, anger may not be a huge issue, but for kids, it can feel really overwhelming and unjust. It’s important for them to know that their feelings are seen and understood. This understanding helps them control their emotions better.
