Studies show those carrying excess weight tend to have less varied gut bacteria compared to slimmer individuals. Animal research also shows transferring intestine bacteria from obese to thin mice can trigger weight gain in the thin mice.

Probiotics likely act on weight by increasing fullness hormones such as GLP-1 and boosting fat-blocking proteins like ANGPTL4. They also reduce inflammation linked to obesity by improving gut health.

In human studies, probiotic supplements with Lactobacillus strains lowered body fat percentage in overweight and obese participants. One strain called Lactobacillus gasseri reduced belly fat, BMI, and hip circumference in research.
