FDA Eyes Ban on Brominated Vegetable Oil in Foods

The US Food and Drug Administration is considering a significant step: banning brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in foods. This proposal comes after extensive research showing potential harm from BVO consumption.

Recent studies, particularly those in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, have highlighted the health risks associated with BVO.

These findings have prompted the FDA to question the safety of BVO in our diets.

In response to growing concerns, several major beverage companies, including PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, have begun removing BVO from their products.

While BVO has been banned in places like Europe and Japan, it remains in some American beverages, primarily in smaller brands.

Historically, BVO has been under scrutiny for decades. A pivotal study in 1976 raised alarms about its impact on vital organs in animals.

More recent research in 2022 further emphasized the potential risks, linking BVO to changes in thyroid function and its accumulation in the heart, liver, and fat tissue.
